Transformation
The plan includes the transformation of a part of a city block on Lange Elisbethstraat, Korte Elisabethstraat and Achter Clarenburg in the centre of Utrecht. The new building volume with retail space on the ground floor and two floors for living has been carefully integrated into the situation in collaboration with the municipal urban planning department. The architecture mass responds to the scale and the morphology of the historical city as well as with the urban scale of the adjacent XL-scale Hoog Catharijne shopping centre.
Reuse
The characteristic 1920s facade on the corner of Lange Elisabethstraat will be restored and the concrete structure at Achter Clarenburg will be reused.
Courtyard
The plan shows the possibility of residential densification of the city centre above the shopping street. Above the new store, 14 apartments and studios will be realised on the roof garden. An old gate on street level gives access to an existing alley and through this access to the courtyard above. Is this a good start for the whole building block? We see a lot of potential for living in the city in the tranquility of an upgraded courtyard with a green roof landscape.
